- Jacob Neilsen is a/the guru of web usability. A former Sun Microsystems engineer, he analyses various aspects of web design and the user interface in an effort to understand how people use the internet. He publishes Alertbox helpful hints and "errors to avoid" at useit.com; his Top 10 Mistakes in Web Design is probably required reading for PRFU 2340. As a sidenote, on a widescreen monitor his own website is a true offence to the eyes .
- The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C ) is an international organization which oversees development of the world wide web. Its central belief is open source, meaning that the internet should be freely available to all, and without external interference.
- Tim Berners-Lee is credited with inventing the world wide web. With Robert Cailliau, he set up the world's first website and server inside the French bit of CERN (presumed current residence of the Higgs boson - though it might be in the Swiss bit too). He developed/pioneered hypertext mark-up language (html) as a method of addressing location, and has continued to advocate for the web as a freely available, unencumbered creative source for sharing knowledge.
Please note, to avoid confusion, Al Gore only claims he created the internet.
